The Federal Government has inaugurated an expanded Ministerial Task Team on Building Collapse, as concerns grow over the increasing number of incidents across the country.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, led the inauguration on Wednesday, stating that the frequency of building collapses is “unacceptable” and has resulted in significant loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property.
“A committee was earlier established under Architect Maji Liberty Alkali to investigate the causes and recommend solutions,” Dangiwa said. “They submitted 18 recommendations, and to ensure full implementation, we have expanded the team to include key regulatory and professional bodies.”
He cited multiple factors contributing to structural failures, including poor designs, substandard materials, inadequate supervision, and lack of proper building approvals.
Dangiwa stressed the need for collaboration among professionals such as architects, engineers, builders, town planners, surveyors, and estate valuers to prevent future tragedies.
The expanded task team is expected to advise the government on implementing the committee’s recommendations, develop a national compliance framework, propose regulatory reforms, and suggest legislation to strengthen federal oversight in the building sector.
Dr. Shuaib Belgore, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, said the new team reflects the government’s commitment to tackling the issue comprehensively.
