The Federal Government has issued a travel advisory to Nigerians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East.
In a press release dated February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the volatile situation in the region, particularly military actions reportedly undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory moves by Iran in some Gulf states.
The ministry warned of heightened tensions and the potential for further escalation, urging Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries to take precautionary measures.
It advised citizens to remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times, especially avoiding strategic, military or government installations which could become flashpoints.
The government also strongly recommended that Nigerians limit non-essential movement and travel within the affected countries until the security situation stabilises. They were further cautioned to avoid large gatherings and public demonstrations.
Citizens were urged to strictly comply with security and safety directives issued by local authorities and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure their safety.
The ministry encouraged Nigerians to stay informed through reliable international and local news sources and to rely only on official communication channels for accurate safety information, warning against misinformation.
In addition, the government said the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and missions in neighbouring Gulf countries — including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia — are on high alert to provide necessary consular assistance and facilitate communication.
The ministry reassured the public that the safety and well-being of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority and pledged to continue assessing the situation while providing updates as necessary.
