The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has dismissed reports linking the Federal Government to the recent hike in CNG pump prices, clarifying that the adjustments were made solely by private operators.
Matilda Johnson, PCNGI’s Brands and Corporate Communications Manager, said in a statement on Thursday that the government had neither removed subsidies nor issued directives to alter prices, describing such claims as “misleading and false.”
She stressed that CNG remains significantly cheaper and cleaner than petrol and diesel, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s push for a nationwide transition to gas-powered mobility.
According to Johnson, some private marketers recently raised prices from ₦230 to about ₦380 per Standard Cubic Metre (SCM), a decision not influenced by government policy.
She added that the CNG sector has already attracted nearly $1 billion in private investment, reflecting growing confidence in its potential. The PCNGI, she said, remains focused on expanding adoption and ensuring affordability through wider private-sector participation.
