FG secures N250bn funding for Kaduna, Kano light rail construction

The Federal Government has secured about ₦250 billion in funding for the construction of light rail systems in Kaduna and Kano States.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, announced this on Monday at the World Press Conference in Abuja.

He said Kano would receive ₦150 billion, while Kaduna would get ₦100 billion, describing the projects as part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure at the state level.

Idris explained that the rail projects will be facilitated through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and backed by strategic public–private partnerships to ensure sustainable funding and implementation.

Beyond rail development, the minister said the administration is working to empower local governments by entrenching financial autonomy and increasing their revenue allocations, made possible by subsidy removal and ongoing fiscal reforms.

He stressed that this would enable states and local councils to focus more on capital projects and service delivery with reduced dependence on borrowing.

The Kaduna and Kano light rail projects, first outlined by the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, in July 2025, are expected to ease urban mobility, stimulate economic activity, and promote balanced regional growth across northern Nigeria.
