FG to launch biometric Single Travel Emergency Passport in 2026

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a new biometric emergency travel document, the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), by 2026, as part of ongoing reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s immigration system and enhancing border security.

Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, revealed this on Monday in Abuja during the decoration ceremony of 46 newly promoted Assistant Comptrollers of Immigration (ACIs) to the rank of Comptrollers of Immigration.

Nandap explained that the STEP will replace the existing Single Travel Emergency Certificate (STEC) and is designed to improve efficiency, security, and international recognition of Nigeria’s emergency travel documents.

She noted that the passport will be biometric-based and deployed via technology-driven platforms to ensure faster and more seamless service delivery.

“I’m looking forward to embracing 2026, which will see the rollout of reforms aimed at optimising our services, including visas, passport production, and contactless solutions,” Nandap said.

She also highlighted other technology-driven initiatives, such as the recent introduction of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), describing it as a major step toward seamless regional integration and secure cross-border travel within West Africa.

“The STEP, which we plan to launch early next year, is another key programme that will further strengthen our service delivery,” she added.

Nandap urged the newly promoted officers to demonstrate professionalism, vigilance, and integrity, especially in light of Nigeria’s security challenges.

She reminded them that promotion within the NIS is earned through consistent dedication, competence, and commitment to duty.

“Your decoration today reflects the trust placed in you and carries expectations of enhanced leadership, accountability, and exemplary conduct,” she said.

She further stressed the importance of combining professional competence with strong leadership qualities, including decisiveness, empathy, and the ability to mentor subordinates.

“Considering the security challenges we face, your actions will set the tone and reflect the values of this Service,” Nandap added.

The Comptroller General reiterated the Service’s zero tolerance for indolence or unprofessional conduct and encouraged officers to embrace innovation, adapt to emerging challenges, and prioritise the interests of the NIS above personal considerations.

She also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “visionary leadership and commitment to institutional reforms and national security,” and acknowledged Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for providing strategic oversight that continues to enhance the Service’s operations.

Nandap appreciated the families of the promoted officers for their support and sacrifices, describing them as instrumental to their professional success.

She also encouraged officers who were not promoted to remain focused and committed, assuring them that perseverance would eventually be rewarded.

“There is a time for everyone. Keep working hard, and your time will come,” she said.
