Fighting terrorism is everyone’s responsibility — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to actively support security agencies in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime, stressing that national security is a collective responsibility.

In a message posted on his X account on Monday, the President commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the country from criminal and extremist threats.

Tinubu described security personnel as the nation’s frontline defenders, noting that they continue to operate under difficult conditions to safeguard lives and maintain peace across the country.

“You stand as a shield between innocent citizens and those who seek to destroy the peace, safety and dignity of our communities,” he said.

The President acknowledged the challenges faced by troops and security operatives serving in forests, creeks, highways, remote communities and other difficult terrains, praising their resilience despite the risks associated with their duties.

“This fight has not been easy. It has come with pain, pressure and sacrifice. But your courage has remained firm. Your service is acknowledged. Your sacrifice is honoured. Your country does not take you for granted,” he stated.

Tinubu extended his appreciation to personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), intelligence agencies and local security formations for their contributions to national security.

He also recognised the sacrifices made by the families of security personnel, noting that long deployments and the uncertainties of service often place emotional burdens on loved ones.

“I also acknowledge the families behind the uniform. Many of you have endured long absences, anxious nights and the emotional cost of duty. Nigeria remembers that sacrifice too,” he said.

The President paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices helped preserve the nation’s stability.

“We honour those who have paid the supreme price in defence of our country. Their courage lives on in rescued communities, protected families and the survival of the nation they served,” he added.

Tinubu urged citizens to complement the efforts of security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could assist in preventing attacks and apprehending criminals.

“The fight against terror is not only a military operation. It is a national duty. Citizens must support our security forces by providing timely, useful information. When you see something, say something. When you know something, report it,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, the President said Nigeria would not allow terrorists, bandits, kidnappers or violent extremists to define its future.

“Nigeria will not surrender to fear. We will not allow terrorists, bandits, kidnappers or violent extremists to define who we are as a people,” he said.

Tinubu concluded by thanking security personnel for their vigilance and service to the nation while wishing them safety in the discharge of their responsibilities.
