A fire on Monday razed part of the Sango Shopping Complex in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State, destroying goods worth millions of Naira.
The cause of the blaze remains unknown, leaving traders devastated as they continue to assess their losses.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started in a single shop and quickly spread to others before firefighters from both the Federal and State Fire Services arrived.
Despite attempts by shop owners and passersby to control the flames, the timely response of the fire services limited the destruction to eight of the 84 shops in the complex. Thankfully, no lives were lost.
Confirming the incident, Dr. Moroof Akinwande, Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, said the agency was alerted by phone and immediately deployed firefighters led by ACFS Bamidele Samsudeen.
“Upon arrival, we found eight shops engulfed by fire.
“Firefighters launched a coordinated attack and prevented the blaze from spreading further.
“The operation was carried out jointly with officers from the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command.
“No casualties were recorded, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Akinwande said.
He urged the public to take precautions by ensuring fire extinguishers are available in shops and homes to prevent fires from escalating.
