Fire guts Kaduna varsity’s Senate building

A section of the Senate building of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) at the Samaru Main Campus, Zaria in Kaduna State, has been gutted by fire.

It was gathered that a small room housing an electrical Distribution Board (DB) at the ground floor of the Senate building was affected.

Confirming the incident via a statement issued on Friday, December 1, 2023, the Director of the Public Affairs Directorate of ABU, Auwalu Umar, said the fire started at about 4:15 p.m., noting that its cause could not be immediately ascertained.

Umar added that no injuries or casualties were recorded in the incident.

He, however, said the Distribution Board and some obsolete public address systems were consumed by the fire.

“The timely intervention of the university firefighters and security personnel saved the situation. In fact, power has since been restored to the building,” the ABU spokesperson stated.

Umar further disclosed that the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, was at the scene of the incident along with some management staff and hundreds of sympathisers.

He added that the university management has raised a team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.
