Fire ravages Singa Market, destroys 44 shops in Kano

A fire early Monday morning gutted parts of Singa Market in Kano, destroying 44 shops and properties worth millions of naira, the Kano State Fire Service has confirmed.

The blaze, which started at about 5:00 a.m., was reported to the Service by Mubarak Muhammad, who alerted the central control room.

Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, quickly mobilized firefighters from multiple stations across Kano to contain the inferno.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-storey building, Abdulmunafi Yunusa House, measuring approximately 150 x 150, engulfed in flames.

The fire destroyed 25 temporary shops at the front of the building and 19 upper-floor stores, while crews managed to save 24 upper-floor shops and all ground-floor shops.

The operation was initially hindered by obstructed access roads caused by wrongly parked trailers.

Investigations revealed that the building’s single electrical switch may have caused a wiring fault, likely triggering the fire, according to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

Abdullahi urged traders and residents to adhere to electrical safety guidelines to prevent similar incidents, while assuring the public of the Fire Service’s continued commitment to prompt emergency responses.
