A fire outbreak has destroyed more than 76 temporary shelters housing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ngamma village, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria.
The affected residents are largely IDPs from neighbouring Borno State who have been taking refuge in the community after fleeing insecurity.
Following the incident, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), acting on the directive of Governor Mai Mala Buni, visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage.
Preliminary reports indicate that one person sustained injuries and was hospitalised, while at least one household was completely consumed by the fire. Several others suffered partial losses.
In addition to the shelters, the inferno destroyed livestock and large quantities of foodstuffs, worsening the hardship faced by the already vulnerable families.
Eyewitnesses and victims, many of them in tears, narrated how they lost their belongings and livelihoods, appealing to government authorities and humanitarian organisations for urgent assistance and relief support.
