Forgery: UNN never issued me degree certificate ― Minister

The Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has admitted that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State, never issued him a degree certificate, despite allegations that he submitted forged credentials during his ministerial screening.

Nnaji, who has faced certificate forgery allegations since his nomination by President Bola Tinubu in July 2023, made the revelation in a suit filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, against the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the University of Nigeria, its Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and other officials.

In his motion ex parte, Nnaji sought prerogative writs prohibiting UNN and its officials from tampering with his academic records and compelling the institution to release his academic transcript. He also requested supervisory intervention from the Minister of Education and the NUC.

Justice Hauwa Yilwa granted three of his prayers but declined to issue injunctive reliefs against UNN. The case was adjourned to October 6, 2025, for further hearing.

Court documents revealed Nnaji’s startling admission in his supporting affidavit.

He stated that while he completed a Microbiology/Biochemistry programme in 1985, the university had refused to issue him a degree certificate.

The minister cited a December 2023 letter from UNN confirming his admission and completion of studies but insisting he had not been awarded a certificate.

However, in a letter dated October 3, UNN Vice-Chancellor Simon Ortuanya countered Nnaji’s claims, maintaining that the minister did not complete his studies and was never awarded a degree.

The revelation deepens the controversy surrounding Nnaji’s credentials, which critics insist were forged during his nomination and confirmation as minister.
