Former Cambridge professor Jason Arday found dead

Jason Arday, a former professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge, has been found dead in south London at the age of 41.

Arday was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea on Friday afternoon and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called by the London Ambulance Service at about 3:12pm.

A police spokesperson said Arday’s next of kin had been informed and were receiving support from officers.

“At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious. The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit. A file will be prepared for the coroner,” the spokesperson said.

Arday, who became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor, resigned from the university on August 5 following allegations of plagiarism.

Cambridge had launched an investigation into his appointment and tenure at the institution, with the review also expected to examine the university’s hiring process for senior academic positions.

He resigned hours after the university announced the investigation, citing what he described as an “unrelenting level of public scrutiny”.

Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death were ongoing and that a report would be prepared for the coroner.
