The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning its citizens against all travel to parts of 11 states and advising against all but essential travel to parts of 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The latest advisory, published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Thursday, August 20, 2026, cited security concerns across several regions.
The FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East, as well as Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West.
In the South-South, the warning covers riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The UK described the affected areas as river and swamp locations accessible by boat but not by road.
The FCDO also advised against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states.
The advisory extends to Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states in the North-Central region.
In the South-East, Abia, Anambra and Imo states are also listed under the all-but-essential travel warning.
The restriction further covers non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.
The UK government cautioned that no travel could be guaranteed to be safe and urged citizens planning to visit Nigeria to review its travel advice before departure.
It also advised travellers to research their destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance, warning that insurance policies could become invalid if travellers ignored FCDO advice.
The latest advisory also contains information on health, entry requirements, security risks, IVF and fertility treatment scams, overseas adoption and assistance available to British citizens in Nigeria.
