The Federal University of Technology Akure has confirmed the death of one of its students, Favour Olaniyi, a 100-level student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics.
The institution disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Akure by its Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo.
According to the statement, the student was found dead near his off-campus residence on Saturday.
Adebanjo said the university management immediately alerted the police after the incident was reported.
“After the incident was brought to the attention of the university management, the university security apparatus immediately informed the police,” he said.
“Officers from the force were dispatched to the scene, while medical officials from the university and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue.”
The university spokesperson added that the parents of the deceased had been notified, while the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
He stated that the institution was cooperating fully with investigators and providing necessary support to aid the probe.
Adebanjo also disclosed that the university had begun counselling support for some students affected by the incident.
“Officials of the university are in touch with and providing counselling support to some of his co-students who may have been impacted by the unfortunate incident,” he said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time.”
The university further reiterated the availability of counselling and guidance services for students dealing with personal or emotional challenges on and off campus.
Adebanjo encouraged students to take advantage of the support systems provided by the institution whenever they face difficulties.
