Mustapha Hamza Buhari Bakwana, a former political adviser to ex-Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing marginalisation and a lack of internal democracy.
Bakwana made the announcement during a meeting with his supporters in Kano on Tuesday, where he declared his allegiance to the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking at the gathering, Bakwana expressed frustration over what he described as growing exclusion within the APC.
“I have been with the APC since its inception, but over time, we were treated like outsiders,” he said.
“The party no longer values contributions or embraces internal democracy.”
He accused the party, particularly under Ganduje’s leadership, of shifting focus from governance to personal interests and misinformation.
“They have turned the APC into a private estate where only a few individuals benefit, while others are sidelined and silenced,” he added.
Bakwana’s defection is seen as a political blow to the APC in Kano, where he once held significant influence as a key ally of Ganduje.
