Glo foundation marks girl child day with menstrual health campaign

The Glo Foundation, the social investment arm of Globacom, has called on young girls across Nigeria to prioritize their menstrual health to build confidence and achieve their full potential.

The Foundation made this call on Wednesday during activities marking the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC), themed “The GIRL I am, the changes I lead: GIRLS on the frontline of crisis.”

In partnership with Health Aid for All Initiative (HAFAI), an NGO, the Glo Foundation organized a nationwide health awareness campaign aimed at educating girls on menstrual hygiene, mental health, and gender-based violence.

The campaign targeted 100 girls each in selected schools across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin, Owerri, and Kaduna.

“Menstrual periods should never be a reason for a girl to lose confidence, miss school, or feel held back,” the Foundation said in a statement.

“We organized this initiative to provide both education and menstrual care kits, ensuring that every girl has the resources and reassurance she needs to grow with dignity.”

The beneficiary schools included Community Secondary School, Port Harcourt; Methodist Government Junior High School, Agege, Lagos; LGEA Upper Basic School Kudansa, Maraban Rido, Kaduna; Oba Ewuare Grammar School, Oko Central, Benin City; Orogwe Secondary School, Owerri; and Junior Secondary School Dutse Sagwari, Abuja.

In Lagos, Dr. Ugorchi Ohajuruka, a public health expert, and Mrs. Lara Rowland led sessions at Methodist Government Junior High School, Agege, where they discussed menstrual hygiene, mental health, and gender-based violence with the students.

They also engaged the girls in an interactive Q&A session to reinforce the lessons and build awareness about the importance of personal health and self-esteem.

The school’s Principal, Mr. Olawale Adebakin, commended the initiative, emphasizing that empowering the girl child is vital to national development.

“We must take care of the girl child and protect her so that she can grow into a responsible and productive citizen,” he said.

Similar sessions were held simultaneously across the other participating states, with young girls receiving menstrual kits and health education from trained facilitators.

The Glo Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Nigerian girls through health, education, and mentorship initiatives that help them overcome barriers and thrive in society.
