A military convoy led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 under Operation FANSAN YAMMA has repelled an ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorists near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.
The convoy was reportedly on its way to visit frontline troops when gunmen launched an attack from surrounding forest areas.
Troops responded with heavy firepower, successfully neutralising five of the attackers and preventing the ambush from escalating.
During a follow-up clearance operation, soldiers recovered a cache of weapons and other items, including an OJC gun, a PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, a bandolier of PKT ammunition, several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, five motorcycles, two mobile phones and a camel bag containing ₦840,000.
Troops remain deployed around the area as security forces intensify surveillance to forestall further attacks.
Security sources say the operation delivers a strong warning to insurgent groups operating across the North-West.
