Gombe court grants woman bail over N60,000 oil theft

A Chief Magistrate Court in Gombe has granted bail to a 55-year-old woman, Antine Amadu, who is standing trial for allegedly receiving a stolen gallon of Turkey cooking oil valued at N60,000.

Amadu, a resident of Dawaki Quarters, Gombe, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Musa-Saleh Kilawa of Chief Magistrate Court No. 1 on a charge of receiving stolen property.

The prosecution alleged that Amadu received the cooking oil from one Ibrahim Hassan of Aniya Quarters at about 1am on August 27, 2026.

According to the state counsel, Hafsat Aliyu, the oil was allegedly stolen from Haruna Magaji of Ajiya Quarters before it was handed over to the defendant.

Aliyu told the court that the alleged offence contravened Section 317 of the Penal Code Law.

“The defendant is before this honourable court for allegedly receiving property which she knew or had reason to believe was stolen,” the prosecutor said.

The charge was read and explained to Amadu, after which she pleaded not guilty.

Following the plea, the magistrate considered her bail application and granted her bail.

The court subsequently adjourned the case until September 14, 2026, for hearing.

The prosecution is expected to present its evidence when the matter resumes.
