Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has raised concern over the movement of bandits into the state from neighbouring areas, particularly Kwara State, calling for sustained military operations along border communities.
The governor spoke on Saturday in Osogbo at the Passing Out Parade of the 89 Regular Recruits Intake at the Nigerian Army Depot, where he described the security situation as a serious national concern requiring continuous vigilance.
Adeleke praised the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining peace and stability across the country, noting that Osun has remained one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states due to effective collaboration between the state government and security agencies.
He disclosed that soldiers were already conducting special security operations in communities along the Osun–Kwara boundary to curb banditry, kidnapping and possible infiltration into the state.
“Our Army Chief, your men are currently operating in border towns between Osun and Kwara to contain banditry and kidnapping. We are grateful for this support,” the governor said, while urging that the operations be sustained to prevent criminals from exploiting border areas.
Addressing the newly passed-out recruits, Adeleke urged them to uphold discipline, professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing the Nigerian Army as the backbone of national security.
The governor also called for political dialogue and cooperation, stressing that political stability would ease pressure on the military and strengthen national security. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promoting inclusive governance and unity.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government confirmed a recent banditry attack on Ora Igbomina, a border community, which led to an emergency State Security Council meeting in Osogbo.
Following the meeting, Adeleke sympathised with residents affected by the attack, describing it as a major security breach. He assured that a military-backed rescue and protection operation had been ongoing for several days to rescue victims and prevent further attacks, especially in border areas.
The parade was attended by senior military officers, traditional rulers, government officials, security personnel and members of the media.
