Gov Nwifuru sets up committee to pay LG retirees in Ebonyi

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, on Friday inaugurated a six-member committee to verify and pay pensions to retired local government workers in the state, dating back to 1996 when the state was created.

Speaking during the inauguration in Abakaliki, Governor Nwifuru emphasized the importance of transparency and efficiency in the process. The committee is chaired by Mrs. Catherine Ogbu, wife of a former deputy governor.

“I have confidence in the calibre of individuals appointed to carry out this task,” Nwifuru said. “We want every local government retiree to receive their full entitlements. This exercise is a priority—not because we have excess funds, but because pension payment is just as important as physical development projects.”

He directed the committee to ensure that verified retirees are paid immediately, using available documentation to confirm eligibility. “No retiree should wait after verification. They must receive their payment alerts the same day,” he added.

The governor also commended local government chairmen for supporting the initiative and treating it with urgency.

In her response, Mrs. Ogbu thanked the governor for the trust placed in the committee and assured that they would carry out the assignment with integrity and diligence.
