Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 22 lives in a fatal road accident involving members of the state’s contingent returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

The victims—primarily young athletes, coaches, and officials—were traveling back to Kano when their bus reportedly veered off a bridge along the Kano–Zaria expressway, resulting in the death of 22 people and leaving several others critically injured.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf extended his condolences to the grieving families and the entire sporting community.

To honor the victims and offer collective prayers, the state government has declared Monday, 2nd June 2025, as a public holiday.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident that occurred to our brave athletes and officials on their way home,” the statement read.
