A non-governmental organisation, Christian Conscience, has urged the federal government to address the root cause of the flooding in the Mokwa area of Niger State rather than the palliative measures taken each time there is a disaster.
The group said this in a statement issued by its National President, Dr. Yetunde Akinluyi, and General Secretary, Revd Kolawole Verrals, on Friday, June 5, 2025.
The Christian Conscience commiserated with the flood victims while praying that God will ease the pain and loss from the disaster.
While commending the government’s intervention efforts carried out by Vice President Kashim Shetima on Thursday, the group stressed the need for sustainable solutions.

“Providing palliatives without addressing the root cause may be futile,” the group noted.
The Christian NGO stated that there were similar flooding incidents in Kano State wondering if the affected dams had been fixed.
It listed measures that could be taken including the need to identify and fix flood-prone areas nationwide before the next raining season.
The Christian Conscience also called on the government to monitor aid distribution to ensure those who are affected are the beneficiaries.
The group noted that Mokwa and Niger State is the agricultural hub of Nigeria, urging the government to identify and address flood-prone areas nationwide.
