Gunmen abduct travellers on Cross River highway

Gunmen have abducted a yet-to-be-identified number of travellers on the Ikom-Ogoja expressway in Cross River State.

An eyewitness disclosed that the travellers were abducted by the gunmen between Okomita and Uyanghoa communities near Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

He said the gunmen emerged from the forest in the area and shot at vehicles to force them to stop.

The source added that some of the travellers sustained gunshot wounds before the gunmen moved others into the forest.

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Sule Balarabe, said the number of victims has not been ascertained.

Balarabe added that while awaiting the number of victims from the Divisional Police Officer in the area, a tactical team, including members of the police anti-kidnap squad had been deployed to the area.
