Gunmen attack Catholic Church, raze documents, priest’s car in C’River

Gunmen have attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Katchuan Iruan in the Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, who confirmed the incident, said the attack occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Eitokpah disclosed that the gunmen destroyed all the church records kept in the sacristy and set ablaze the priest’s Lexus 350 Jeep and a Toyota Corolla car parked within the church premises.

The police spokesman said: “No suspect has been identified at this time. Efforts are ongoing to ascertain those responsible for the unfortunate criminal act.

“Should any suspect be identified, this will be made known to the public.

“So far, the scene has been visited, photographs taken, the case has been referred to Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation.”
