Gunmen have attacked the country home of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Frank Mbah in Ezimo community, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing a police officer guarding the residence.
It was gathered that the gunmen, who struck at about 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2025, reportedly shot the police officer as he opened the gate and fled into the bush with his rifle.
Community members said the attackers attempted to break into the house but were resisted by the slain officer, whose intervention likely prevented a more devastating outcome.
“When the security guard raised an alarm, the assailants killed him, collected his rifle, and disappeared.

“We suspect they are the same assailants who killed Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya in nearby Eha-Ndiagu the following evening. Kidnapping activities have been rampant around this area, sometimes less than 500 metres from Mbah’s residence,” a community source told reporters on Sunday.
The source added that the attack highlights worsening insecurity in the area, saying: “They just killed the officer and collected his rifle. Normally, more than one officer is stationed there, but the others were absent during the attack. Security operatives did not anticipate anything.”
Local residents fear that the attackers, suspected to be herdsmen, may have been planning to abduct DIG Mbah’s mother, noting that kidnapping incidents have recently increased around Ezimo and neighbouring communities.
The Enugu State Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the incident as of press time.
