Gunmen kidnap NPC commissioner, aides, demand N500m ransom

Gunmen have abducted the Bayelsa State Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC), Gloria Izonfuo, in Rivers State.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the abduction on Monday, April 24, said the NPC commissioner was abducted on Sunday alongside her driver and maid at the Ogbakiri Junction on the East-West Road in the state.

Iringe-Koko said the victims were returning to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, after a trip to Brass in Bayelsa State when they were abducted.

The police spokesperson added that the police tactical team has been deployed to ensure the rescue of the NPC commissioner and her aides.

It was further gathered that abductors demanded N500 million ransom for the release of the victims.

Izonfuo was formerly Head of Civil Service in Bayelsa State.

She had been at the centre of pre-census activities in Bayelsa State in the last two weeks.
