Three herders and about 50 cattle have been killed in a fresh attack around Aloghom in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred a day after a herder, identified as Yakubu Ishaku, was reportedly killed alongside 18 cattle around Nyerwe community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
Coordinator of the Fulbe Fulani Development Association in Mangu, Hashimu Yahaya, described the latest attack as brutal, saying the victims were killed while tending to their cattle.
He identified the deceased as Garzali Shaibu, 18; Bashiru Yakubu, 14; and Salim Abubakar, 15.
The state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, also confirmed the incident.
Babayo said the gunmen invaded the grazing area and opened fire on the herders while they were carrying out their activities.
“The herders were just tending to their cattle when suddenly the perpetrators attacked and started shooting sporadically. On Thursday, they killed a herder and 18 cattle around Nyerwe. Today, three herders and 50 cattle were killed,” he said.
He described the incident as an unprovoked attack and alleged that it was part of an attempt to drive Fulani herders from the state and destroy their livelihoods.
“It is obvious that it is a calculated attempt to cleanse Fulani herders and destroy their means of livelihood in Plateau. We have informed all the relevant security agencies in the state, including DSS and Operation Enduring Peace,” Babayo said.
The MACBAN chairman condemned the attack and urged herding communities across the state to remain calm and law-abiding.
“I call on all herding communities to remain calm as security forces have been informed about the situation. Nobody should take the law into their hands,” he said.
Babayo called on security agencies to investigate the killings, identify those responsible and ensure that justice was served.
“This is one too many,” he said.
The spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven, Captain Polycarp Oteh, had not responded to inquiries as of press time.
