Haiti politician, other citizens call for constitution’s amendment

The founder and leader of a party, Jeunes Dirigeants Haïtiens Progressistes, Werley Nortreus, has filed a petition, asking the Haitian Government to immediately amend the country’s constitution.

Nortreus, in a petition filed alongside Haitians in Haiti and the Diaspora, said the country needs a new constitution that ensures all citizens have equal access to opportunities, adding that candidates who are 25 years of age and older should be able to contest for political offices.

The leader of the party and the citizens lamented that after many years, the old constitution’s results had little impact on the nation, stressing that changing the constitution is worthwhile.

According to them, a new constitution was first proposed by the former Haitian President and other leaders but was postponed because of a heavy COVID-19 caseload.

They added that the amendment of the country’s constitution would make numerous other recommendations for the country that will enhance the quality of life for all its residents.

“Haiti needs young educated people with strong leadership skills to take over and lead the country in the right direction.

“The only way to have a new Haiti is to establish a new constitution that gives candidates who are 25 years old and older the right to run for a position among the three branches of the government according to their choice.

“A new constitution where everyone is included is the only way Haitians will be able to change the miserable situation that Haiti is in because of its old constitution,” Nortreus added.

The famous politician noted that Haiti must concentrate on constitutional amendments, national security, and free elections that include younger candidates as well as older ones.
