Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has come under a wave of sarcastic reactions on X over a series of policy promises he has unveiled ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has in recent weeks outlined several measures he says he would introduce or reverse if elected president.

Among his proposals is a plan to restore petrol subsidy, which he announced on August 19. He argued that the Federal Government had failed to adequately account for funds saved following the removal of the subsidy.

The proposal attracted criticism from members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including President Bola Tinubu.

Atiku has also pledged to reopen Nigeria’s land borders and develop the country’s southern ports to facilitate trade.

On September 1, he announced another policy proposal, saying his administration would reduce the cost burden of education and introduce debt forgiveness for eligible student borrowers.

The succession of promises has now become a subject of online satire, with some X users joking about what Atiku could announce next.

One user posted a mock suggestion that Atiku might promise to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while another joked that he could campaign on bringing back strikes by university lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Other posts included fabricated promises on issues ranging from mass weddings to providing children for women unable to conceive.

Another user sarcastically suggested that Atiku might promise to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

The reactions reflect a growing online debate over the former vice-president’s campaign proposals, with supporters and critics interpreting his policy announcements differently as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 election.

Atiku, who served as vice-president between 1999 and 2007, is seeking the presidency for the 2027 election on the ADC platform.
