‘He understands governance’: Sanwo-Olu endorses Hamzat as successor

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday endorsed his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as his successor ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election in the state.

Sanwo-Olu, who described Hamzat as competent, prepared, and deserving to lead, said the deputy governor formally declared his intention during a consultation at the State House, attended by party leaders, cabinet members, former senators, ministers, and diplomats.

The high-level delegation, he noted, reflected broad political support and confidence in Hamzat’s capacity to lead Lagos effectively if elected.

“We just concluded a visit where the deputy governor came with a strong delegation to formally inform me of his intention,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor described the meeting as warm and consultative, saying stakeholders unanimously backed Hamzat’s aspiration after extensive deliberations.

“It was a warm family meeting and, at the end of consultations, it was unanimous that the deputy governor is fit, ready and well-prepared,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu commended Hamzat’s experience and deep understanding of governance, saying he had been involved in shaping policies and programmes since the administration began.

Sanwo-Olu said: “He is a man who understands governance deeply and has been part of the system, knowing how every aspect functions.

“He has worked with me with humility and at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment and support.”

Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation for the formal notification, describing it as an honour and a mark of respect within their political relationship.

He also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping their political journey, noting their partnership had long been envisioned and nurtured.

“I thank our father and leader, the president, who saw the vision years ago and believed in both of us,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about Hamzat’s chances, urging Lagosians to rally behind his aspiration in the interest of continuity.
