Scores of motorists and passengers have been stuck in heavy traffic following a protest by the residents of Iyana Oworosonki against the demolition of buildings in the area.
Many residents displaced by the demolition took over the Oworonshoki axis of the Third Mainland Bridge, leading to heavy traffic on Monday, September 8, 2025.
The aggrieved residents were armed with placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Stop demolishing our house’, “Stop demolishing our life’, and ‘Give us back our lands and houses’, among others.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, and officers of the command have arrived at the scene of the protest as of the time of filing this report.
Property owners and occupants were displaced after a combined enforcement team of the Lagos State Government, in the early hours on Saturday, September 6, commenced the demolition of all unapproved buildings along Lekki and Iyana Oworosonki coastal lines in the state.
This came barely two days after the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, raised the alarm that about 10,625 cubic metres of sand are dredged daily in Lagos.
The government warned that unchecked activities could destabilise the ecosystem, damage aquatic habitats, and lead to a total collapse of the lagoon and waterfront areas.
