‘He’ll bring the world closer to peace’: Tinubu congratulates Trump on election victory

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Donald Trump on his re-election as the 47th President of the United States.

Trump is on the verge of winning the November 5, 2024, presidential election in the U.S. with 266 Electoral College votes compared with 219 for his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, as of 11:15 a.m. (Nigerian time) on Wednesday, November 6.

A victory would make Trump become the first former president to return to the White House in more than 100 years.

Tinubu, while speaking on the election via a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said: “Acknowledging the United States’ influence, power, and position in determining the trend and course of global events, President Trump will bring the world closer to peace and prosperity.”

Tinubu said he looks forward to strengthening the ties between Nigeria and the United States amid the complex challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world.

He added: “Together, we can foster economic cooperation, promote peace, and address global challenges that affect our citizens.

“Trump’s victory reflects the trust and confidence the American people have placed in his leadership.”

The president, who also congratulated the Americans on their commitment to democracy, said he believes that “given President Trump’s experience as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, his return to the White House as the 47th president will usher in an era of earnest, beneficial, and reciprocal economic and development partnerships between Africa and the United States.”
