The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested a young couple and five others for allegedly conducting a marriage ceremony without parental consent or adherence to Islamic procedures in the Nasarawa area of Kano metropolis.
Those arrested include the groom, identified as Aminu, 23, and his bride, Sadiya, 22. Others taken into custody were Umar, 24, who acted as the groom’s representative; Abubakar, 23, who served as the bride’s guardian; Usaina, 21; and two other young women who reportedly witnessed the ceremony.
Reports indicate that the couple conducted the marriage with a bride price of ₦10,000, without the approval of their parents or the presence of recognised religious authorities.
Confirming the development, the Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujaheeddeen Aminuddeen, said the arrests followed complaints from concerned residents who alerted the authorities about the “unapproved” union.
Dr. Aminuddeen explained that the suspects’ actions contravened Islamic principles and the marriage regulations in Kano State, adding that the Hisbah would not condone any practice that undermines religious and legal norms governing marriage.
He disclosed that the arrested individuals are currently in Hisbah custody as investigations continue.
