A 35-year-old housewife, Sarah Gideon, on Thursday, July 10, 2025, appeared before a Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a goat.

The housewife, a resident of Narayi in Kaduna, was charged with one count of stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Luka, told the court that the complainant, Martins Bobai, reported the matter at Barnawa Police Station on Tuesday, July 8.

Luka said Gideon, who went to do a farm job close to the complainant’s house, saw the goat tied outside the house and allegedly stole it.

He said the defendant untied the goat and was dragging it when the complainant’s neighbour saw her struggling with it and raised the alarm.

Luka added that when the woman was caught, she could not give a satisfactory explanation on why she untied the goat.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

“Section 217 stipulates seven years imprisonment for stealing if found guilty,” he said.

Gideon, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the housewife bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Emmanuel adjourned the matter till August 14 for hearing.
