How to find your home address, name on Nigeria’s new digital postcode system

Nigerians can now look up their home addresses and obtain digital postcodes through the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, which assigns an 11-character code to each addressable building across the country.

The system, introduced through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and launched nationwide on October 1, 2026, is designed to make locations easier to identify for deliveries, logistics, emergency response and public service delivery.

The platform allows users to search for addresses using house numbers, street names, place names, postcodes and aliases. Some records also display homeowners’ names where properties are commonly identified by their owners’ names.

Here is how to find your postcode and check the address information linked to your building.

1. Visit the official NIPOST postcode website

Go to postcode.gov.ng and select the “Find my postcode” option.

Users can also access the system through the NIPOST Postcode mobile application, available for Android through Google Play. The website lists the iOS version as coming soon.

2. Search for your home address

Enter your house number, street name, neighbourhood or another relevant location detail in the search field.

You can also search using a place name, postcode or alias, where available.

Select the result that matches your address and inspect the map to confirm that it identifies your building. Check nearby roads, neighbouring properties and recognisable landmarks before accepting the result.

3. Check if your name appears

Some properties may be listed using their owners’ names because residents commonly use those names to identify buildings, particularly in areas without clear street names or house numbers.

NIPOST Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi, said officials collected both formal and informal addresses during field data gathering.

“During ground data collection, we collected standard or informal addresses of buildings,” she said, according to a report by TheCable.

To check whether your name appears, inspect the address description linked to your building or search for your name if it is commonly used to identify the property.

However, if your name does not appear in the results, it does not necessarily mean your building is missing from the system. The postcode identifies the building, not its owner or occupants.

4. Use your phone’s location to identify your building

If you are at or near your home, enable your phone’s location service and allow the application to access your location when prompted.

Use the “Find My Postcode” feature to display your position and nearby mapped buildings. Select the correct building to retrieve its digital postcode.

Take care to distinguish your property from neighbouring buildings, as each addressable building may have a different code.

5. Report errors or request a missing postcode

If your building’s address details are incorrect, use the platform’s available option to suggest a correction.

If your property has no postcode, you can request one through the website or application by providing relevant address and location details. A Google Maps link may also help officials identify the building.

NIPOST reviews requests for missing postcodes and proposed corrections before updating its records.

6. Understand what your postcode identifies

The digital postcode belongs to a building or addressable location, not an individual resident. People living in the same building can therefore use the same postcode alongside their regular written address.

Anyone moving to another building will need to use the postcode assigned to the new location.

The system is intended to improve address identification and support deliveries, logistics, emergency response and government services.

According to information provided on the official platform, finding, saving and sharing a digital postcode is free.

Residents are advised to confirm that the building shown on the map matches their intended address before using or sharing the postcode.
