Police in Imo State have arrested a man, Kelechi Prince Okeke, over the alleged death of his 29-year-old wife, Olumma Chizoba Lucy Akataobi, following a domestic dispute.

Okeke, who is from Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, is currently being held at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Owerri as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to family members, the couple had an argument on Monday, February 2, after the deceased reportedly asked her husband to release N35,000 paid by a customer into his bank account.

Olumma, who traded at Relief Market in Owerri, was said to have completed a sale worth N35,000. After an initial transfer attempt failed, the customer allegedly paid the money into her husband’s account. Her husband reportedly confirmed receiving the payment.

A disagreement reportedly broke out when she returned home and requested the money to reinvest in her business.

Ezinne Akataobi, a sister of the deceased, alleged that the argument turned violent and resulted in Olumma’s death.

However, Okeke has denied assaulting his wife. He reportedly told authorities that she suddenly complained of chest pains while eating, vomited, and later died.

The family has disputed his account and is demanding a thorough investigation and justice.

Police authorities in Owerri have taken over the case, while photographs circulating online show the suspect in handcuffs.

As of the time of filing this report, the police had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
