The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting a rift between him and the Nigerian military, describing the claims as false, mischievous, and baseless.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Wike reaffirmed his unwavering respect for the Armed Forces, stressing that his administration has consistently supported military operations within the FCT and across the country.
“Let me make it clear: I do not have any problem with the military and will never have.
“I have great respect for the institution and for the sacrifices they make to keep our nation safe,” he said.
Wike clarified that his earlier comments were taken out of context, explaining that he was merely emphasizing the need for security operatives to act within the law and uphold constitutional standards.
“What I said was simple — no officer or individual should carry out an illegal order.
“If an instruction is unlawful, you have the right to say no.
“That does not mean I have a problem with the military,” he explained.
The minister reiterated the FCT Administration’s continued logistical and infrastructural support for security agencies, describing the military as a crucial partner in sustaining peace and stability in the nation’s capital.
“As FCT Minister, I have continued to support the military in their operations.
“Anyone saying otherwise is simply not telling the truth,” he stated.
Wike also urged journalists to maintain professionalism, verify information, and avoid sensational reporting.
“I want journalists to always verify facts and report accurately.
“Do not cut or misquote statements to suit headlines.
“Let us focus on what builds our country,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his admiration for the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing them as pillars of national unity and guardians of peace.
“The military is an institution I will always respect.
“They have sacrificed so much for this country, and they deserve our full support,” he added.
