Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has pardoned 130 inmates and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
Mutfwang announced the exercise of his prerogative of mercy on Thursday in a goodwill message to Plateau residents and Nigerians at home and abroad.
According to a statement announcing the decision, the governor acted after consultations with the Plateau State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
“Governor Mutfwang, after due consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates, while four inmates serving death sentences had their sentences reduced to life imprisonment,” the statement said.
The governor said the Independence anniversary offered Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey, honour the sacrifices of past leaders and assess the challenges confronting the nation.
He urged citizens to renew their commitment to building a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.
Mutfwang also called on Nigerians to preserve the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that nation-building was a responsibility shared across generations.
He said every citizen had a role to play in creating a stable society where people could pursue their aspirations and have a sense of belonging.
The governor acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Tinubu towards sustaining the country’s unity and stability and urged Plateau residents to remain committed to the Nigerian project despite existing challenges.
He wished Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence anniversary.
