The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman-nominee, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has declared that he was not part of President Bola Tinubu’s legal team during the aftermath of the 2023 presidential election.
“I was never part of President Bola Tinubu’s legal team in court,” Amupitan, a professor of Law, declared while responding to questions from senators during his screening session at the Senate plenary in Abuja on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio further asked whether the INEC chairman-nominee had served as part of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or Labour Party (LP) legal teams, to which he also responded in the negative.
“I was not a member of any team,” Amupitan, who is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University of Jos (UniJos) in Plateau State, said.
Amupitan’s nomination as INEC chairman has generated public interest, with some political observers questioning his neutrality ahead of his confirmation.
