The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received 12 additional applications from groups seeking registration as political parties, raising the total number of pending applications to 122.
This development follows an earlier update on June 23, 2025, when the commission disclosed it had received 110 applications.
Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday. He emphasized that the review process remains open, transparent, and in line with legal provisions.
“As of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the number of applications submitted to the Commission has increased to 122,” Olumekun said. “We are processing these applications fairly and in accordance with the Electoral Act and our 2022 Guidelines for Political Party Registration.”
He added that the names, acronyms, addresses, and interim leadership of the latest applicant groups have been published on INEC’s website and public platforms.
INEC also revealed it had observed some leadership changes within a few of the applying associations, including a case where an interim secretary was replaced following defection to another group.
The Commission urged all applicant groups to maintain consistent leadership and contact information throughout the application process to avoid delays.
“Associations are advised to remain consistent with their proposed leadership and addresses, as internal disruptions could affect the timely consideration of their applications,” Olumekun added.
INEC pledged to continue providing regular updates as the vetting process progresses.
