The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected suggestions that Nigerians have lost confidence in the country’s electoral system, describing such claims as unfounded.
Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the strong turnout in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise proves citizens still trust the process.
He pointed to the 2023 general elections and calls for INEC to take over local government polls as further evidence of public confidence.
According to him, 69,376 Nigerians pre-registered online within the first seven hours of the CVR portal opening on August 18. By August 24, the figure had risen to 1.37 million, and by September 1, 2.53 million.
He added that within the first month of in-person registration, 764,695 Nigerians had completed the process.
“There is no African country with these types of voter registration figures within one month,” Oyekanmi said, insisting the data reflects continued faith in INEC’s credibility.
