INEC postpones voter revalidation exercise until after 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, saying it will now hold after the 2027 General Election.

The commission announced the decision on Friday following a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held in Abuja, during which the proposed exercise was among issues deliberated upon.

In a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC said the revalidation exercise — designed to verify and update voter records, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and ensure the accuracy of personal data on the national register — remained a priority but would not proceed before the general election.

The exercise also intended to allow registered voters to confirm and, where necessary, correct their details on the voters’ roll.

INEC gave no specific reason for the postponement beyond the decision to schedule it after the 2027 polls.

The commission, however, reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.
