INEC to conduct Zamfara supplementary polls Aug 21 in five units

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 21 for supplementary elections in five polling units of the Kaura Namoda South State Assembly constituency in Zamfara.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmmud Isah, announced the decision at a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau on Tuesday, explaining that the exercise became necessary after results from the affected units in Kyambarawa and Sakajiki wards were cancelled during the August 16 bye-election due to irregularities.

According to Isah, the polls will be held in three units in Kyambarawa ward—Shiyar Magaji (Kofar Hamza) 002, Tukasu (Sabuwar Kasuwa) 009, and Kofar Fafa (Shiyar Fada)—as well as two units in Sakajiki ward—Alko (Shiyar Kudu) 002 and Shiyar Nufawa (Kofar MD Nuhu) 007.

INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau, noted that 5,446 voters are registered in the affected areas, with 3,265 PVCs already collected.

He explained that while the APC led with 7,001 votes against the PDP’s 5,339, the 1,662-vote margin was less than the number of PVCs collected, prompting the election to be declared inconclusive.

He said the decision was in line with Sections 24 (2&3), 47 (3), and 51 (2) of the Electoral Act 2022.
