Iranian authorities on Saturday executed three men convicted of rape in Gorgan Prison, located in the country’s northern region, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news outlet.
The men, described as members of a three-man gang, were arrested shortly after three women came forward to report the assault.
Heydar Asiabi, the local judiciary chief, confirmed their swift apprehension and subsequent conviction.
Rape and murder are capital offenses in Iran, which, according to Amnesty International, ranks second in the world for the highest number of executions. These punishments are typically carried out by hanging at dawn within prison facilities.
However, a recent public execution in the country’s northwest for a similar case involving rape and murder sparked widespread attention and debate.
Iran continues to face criticism from international human rights organizations over its frequent use of the death penalty.
