Fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Friday night ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State, reportedly abducting a serving general and killing several soldiers, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), according to a report by HumAngle.
The abducted officer, said to be a brigade commander, was reportedly leading the troops at the time of the attack.
If confirmed, the development would mark the first documented instance of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline, the conflict-focused news platform noted.
While insurgents have previously killed senior military officers in the Northeast, cases involving the abduction of such high-ranking personnel are extremely rare.
The Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, and the exact number of casualties remains uncertain.
The Army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Onyechi Anele, has not responded to enquiries regarding the attack.
