ISWAP bomb-making expert, senior commander surrender to troops in Yobe

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against insurgency in the North-East, following the surrender of two suspected senior members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Yobe State.

Military sources said the suspects surrendered to troops of the 159 Battalion in Geidam on June 8.

The individuals were identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, with Abu Umar reportedly described as a key bomb-making specialist within the group.

According to the sources, Abu Umar is believed to be an expert in the construction and deployment of Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs), commonly referred to as car bombs.

Security officials said such specialists occupy critical roles in terrorist organisations due to their technical expertise in executing coordinated attacks against military and civilian targets.

They added that intelligence from surrendered operatives could help security forces dismantle bomb-making networks, identify hidden factories, and disrupt logistics routes used by insurgents.

The second suspect, Ismail Mohammed, was reportedly linked to commanders operating around the Baa Shuwa axis within the Timbuktu Triangle, an area known as a stronghold of insurgent activity in the North-East.

Military analysts noted that the surrender of a bomb-making expert is particularly significant, given that VBIEDs have been among the deadliest weapons used by insurgent groups in the region.

Over the years, such attacks have targeted military bases, markets, religious centres and other civilian locations, causing heavy casualties and widespread destruction.

Operation Hadin Kai authorities have continued to intensify counter-insurgency operations across the region, combining military pressure with intelligence-driven efforts aimed at weakening terrorist networks and encouraging defections.
