The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has appointed Abu Khalifa as its new commander in the Timbuktu Triangle area following the killing of its former leader, Julaibib, during a Nigerian military operation in Borno State.
Security sources disclosed on Monday that the decision was reached after consultations within the group’s leadership structure.
Julaibib was reportedly neutralised by troops of Operation Hadin Kai in the Kimba axis of Damboa Local Government Area, prompting ISWAP to swiftly reorganise its command in the area.
According to intelligence findings, Abu Khalifa has now taken over leadership responsibilities in the strategic Timbuktu Triangle, a known stronghold of insurgent activities.
While the group has yet to officially name a second-in-command, sources indicated that a fighter identified as Tuja is being considered as the leading candidate for the deputy role.
The leadership change comes as Operation Hadin Kai continues sustained offensives targeting ISWAP and Boko Haram enclaves across southern Borno, intensifying pressure on the insurgent groups.
