JAMB, WAEC fix N4,000 one-off fee for WASSCE verification

Candidates using West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions will pay a single N4,000 verification fee, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have clarified.

The two bodies announced the arrangement in a joint statement on Tuesday after consultations over JAMB’s new remote O’Level result verification system.

Under the policy, candidates whose admissions are being processed through JAMB will complete verification of their WAEC results once on the designated platform. The verified outcome will then be transmitted to the institution concerned for use during admission screening and processing.

JAMB and WAEC stressed that tertiary institutions must not demand another payment from candidates for verification of the same result.

“Candidates are to pay N4,000 only, once, for the verification of their WASSCE O’ Level results on the specified platform and not through their desired institutions,” the agencies stated.

The clarification is expected to end concerns that candidates could be required to pay separate verification charges to individual universities, polytechnics or colleges after completing the JAMB process.

WAEC has authorised JAMB to transmit verification outcomes to relevant tertiary institutions, allowing the schools to use the authenticated results for admission and related administrative purposes.

The agencies said candidates who had successfully completed the verification would not be required to repeat the exercise.

“Tertiary institutions are to utilise the verified results shared by JAMB for screening, processing candidate admission and other administrative purposes. Candidates shall not be required to pay for another verification,” they said.

The arrangement forms part of JAMB’s recently introduced technology-driven system that allows candidates to upload and authenticate their O’Level results remotely without routinely visiting JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test centres.

The system initially commenced with WAEC results and is intended to enable JAMB to authenticate candidates’ credentials directly with examination bodies.

JAMB and WAEC said the collaboration would reduce the financial and logistical burden on candidates while improving the security and integrity of academic records used in the admission process.

They also said the centralised system would help eliminate repeated verification exercises and reduce opportunities for the submission of fake or manipulated certificates.

“This collaboration underscores the commitment of both JAMB and WAEC to putting the interests of candidates first, reducing unnecessary costs and simplifying the admission process while maintaining the integrity and security of candidates’ academic records,” the statement said.

Candidates participating in the 2026/2027 admission exercise have therefore been advised to complete their WASSCE verification through the designated JAMB platform and retain the relevant verification details.

The agencies emphasised that the N4,000 charge is a one-time payment and not a separate fee payable to each institution where a candidate seeks admission.

The new arrangement replaces the more fragmented process under which candidates could be required to submit results through different channels and undergo additional verification demanded by individual institutions or examination bodies.

By allowing verified results to be shared with participating institutions, JAMB and WAEC said the system would make the admission process more convenient while reducing unnecessary visits, repeated checks and additional expenses for candidates.
