The Jigawa State Consumer Protection Committee (CPC) has issued a warning to farmers to remain vigilant following the discovery and seizure of fake fertilizer being sold across local markets.
In a statement released by CPC chairman, Umar Alhaji Bala, the committee revealed it had launched a statewide crackdown after receiving reports of fraudulent activities that pose serious risks to food production and food security in the state.
Bala disclosed that the operation led to the seizure of several bags of suspected counterfeit fertilizer in Babura and Sara markets.
“In Babura, we confiscated six bags of fertilizer lacking both NAFDAC registration and manufacturer details,” he said. “We also seized 40 bags of suspected fake fertilizer in the Sara market.”
In addition to the fertilizer, CPC operatives also impounded a milk powder product known as “non-dairy creamer” in Mallam Madori, which was reportedly causing stomach upset among consumers.
According to the chairman, all suspects linked to the sale of the counterfeit products have been handed over to the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for investigation and prosecution.
The CPC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring only approved and safe products reach the market.
