Jigawa PDP members drag party to court over congress irregularities

Disgruntled members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State have filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Dutse, seeking to stop the conduct of the party’s local government and state congresses over alleged irregularities.

The plaintiffs, Barrister Dahiru Sheikh Mujaddadi and another party member, initiated the legal action against the state PDP and four other defendants.

The case, filed before Hon. Justice Hassan Dikko and marked FHC/DT/CS/19/2025, also names Hon. Umar M. Bature (PDP National Publicity Secretary), Alhaji Abdulillah Ali Diginsa (former state PDP chairman), H.E. Sheriff Abdullahi (Chairman of the Jigawa State Local Government Congress Electoral Committee), and Hon. Bello Isyaku (Chairman of the LG Congress Electoral Appeal Committee in the state) as co-defendants.

During the court session held on May 20, 2025, Justice Dikko adjourned the case to May 28, 2025, for mention.

Addressing journalists at the court premises in Dutse’s Three Arms Zone, one of the plaintiffs, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, explained that they turned to the judiciary after exhausting internal party mechanisms. He alleged that the preparations for the congresses were riddled with constitutional breaches and procedural misconduct.

Adamu, a former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Justice and Privileges, claimed that ward and local government congresses were secretly conducted in private residences and that state congresses were mere appointments rather than democratic elections.

He further alleged that the PDP in Jigawa has been hijacked by a few individuals, turning it into a personal enterprise where dissenting voices are ignored.

“We are confident that the court will nullify any process conducted in violation of the PDP constitution and guidelines,” Adamu asserted.

The plaintiffs are seeking judicial intervention to ensure that due process and internal democracy are upheld within the party.
